Alchemizing Radiance: A Broken Bowl Retreat
In this workshop, we will explore our own personal experiences of brokenness and identify the golden radiance in our own journeys. Using a narrative expressive arts approach, this workshop experience will guide you to confront and accept change and to find a way forward with what is left.
Drawing on the philosophy of wabi-sabi and the ancient African tradition of Sankofa, we will celebrate the cycle of breakage and repair as a natural part of our personal history and growth. Sankofa teaches us to look back at our past experiences, to understand our roots and to bring forward the wisdom and knowledge gained.
Similarly, wabi-sabi emphasizes the beauty in the impermanence of things, encouraging us to accept change and embrace the beauty in the imperfect.
We will reimagine the practice of kintsugi, a traditional Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold, to demonstrate the power of healing and restoration. In Black culture, we have a similar concept called “make a way out of no way,” which is the idea of finding solutions in difficult situations and transforming adversity into triumph.
